Frequently Asked Questions

Where are you based?

My workshop is at St Margaret’s House, 151 London Rd, Edinburgh EH7 6AE. You are welcome to visit by appointment to discuss your project, see materials, or collect finished work.

What types of signs do you make?

I make bespoke wooden signs of all kinds: business signs for pubs, restaurants, hotels and offices, house name signs and numbers, branded serving boards and coasters, menu boards, wedding signs, memorial plaques, and more. If it involves wood and lettering, I can probably help.

What is the difference between CNC carving and laser engraving?

CNC carving cuts into the wood to create 3D raised or recessed lettering and designs. It gives a premium, tactile feel and works beautifully for larger signs. Laser engraving burns the design into the wood surface, ideal for fine detail, logos, and smaller items like coasters and plaques. I offer both techniques and can advise which suits your project best.

What wood types do you use?

I work with oak, walnut, cherry, sapele, and pine. Each has different characteristics: oak is the classic choice for durability and grain, walnut has a rich dark tone, cherry ages beautifully, and pine is a great option for indoor signs and tighter budgets. I am happy to advise on the best wood for your sign.

How much does a custom sign cost?

Every sign is different, so pricing depends on size, wood type, technique (CNC or laser), and complexity of the design. Laser engraved items like coasters and small plaques start from a lower price point, while large 3D carved signs are a bigger investment. Get in touch with your idea and I will give you a clear quote with no obligation.

How do I place an order?

Send me a message via the contact page, email sales@woodensignsedinburgh.co.uk, or call +44 7555 914812. Tell me what you are looking for and I will get back to you within 24 hours with ideas and a quote.

Do you require a deposit?

For custom orders, I ask for a 50% deposit before work begins. The remaining balance is due on completion, before delivery or collection. This is standard for bespoke woodwork.

How long does it take?

Standard items typically ship within 2-3 business days. Custom and bespoke signs depend on the complexity, but I will give you a clear timeline when quoting. I always try to work around your deadlines.

Do you deliver across the UK?

Yes. Free standard delivery is included on all orders to mainland UK addresses. For large or heavy signs, I will quote delivery separately. Edinburgh customers can also collect from my workshop.

Will a wooden sign last outdoors in Scotland?

Absolutely. I select durable hardwoods and apply weather-resistant finishes specifically suited to Scottish conditions. Oak and sapele are particularly resilient. With periodic maintenance, an exterior sign will last for many years.

Can you make signs for pubs and restaurants?

Hospitality is one of my specialities. I create exterior fascia signs, interior feature walls, menu boards, reserve table signs, branded serving boards, and coasters for pubs, restaurants, cafes, and hotels across Edinburgh and the UK.

Can I visit your workshop?

Yes, by appointment. My workshop is at St Margaret’s House, a creative hub for makers and artists in Edinburgh. Drop me a message to arrange a time.
